No recent President has had to face the mess was created by the misguided policies of a previous administration. Black people know that Obama came into office with an unprecedented possibility of a complete economic collapse. Once again, black managers thoroughly understand that we often have to clean up situations that have been left by white predecessors. Very often, we must be almost superhuman to cope with these situations and receive little backing and help from our white brothern other than criticisms on methods or so called lack of speed to make everything whole again. Never mind that it took them years to create the mess as in the case of the 8 years of the Bush administration. Therefore, I agree with your premise about Tavis Smiley et al in their lack of support for President Obama.

Had a conversation with a friend just two days ago and he also was expressing dislike of Tavis, saying Tavis basically didn't like Obama because Obama was unable to attend an event Smiley hosted during the Democratic primary a few years ago, sending Michelle instead. Seems very petty. A good bit of ego likely involved. I have to say it all doesn't matter much because I don't watch Smiley much.

Your analysis of the Tavis Smiley v Randall Kennedy exchange about President Barack Obama is interesting. I supported Obama when he ran for the US Senate in 2004, and I supported him in the Democratic presidential nominating process in 2007 and 2008. I strongly supported Senator Obama in the 2008 presidential election v Sen John McCain. I was elated when Senator Obama won that election and became President-Elect of the US. I am very disappointed in President Obama's performance thus far. I am appalled with Obama's lack of political skill and his apparent autocratic governing style. I am referring to Obama's deal with the teabag-Republicans to extend the Bush tax cuts last December without consulting with Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, and Speaker of The House Nancy Pelosi. A political blunder of historic proportions which set the stage for the fake debt ceiling debate that required the novice President to repudiate his 2008 campaign promises to protect Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security. And in effect adopt right-wing Republican policies that he ran against as a presidential candidate in 2008. I sense that President Obama's autocratic style, his lack of a strong staff that could challenge and influence him to be tougher when the Republicans try to dictate policy, his naive political concept of bipartisanship, his unwillingness to fight hard for his programs, his lack of LBJ type political experience[arm twisting, threats, and backroom deals]. I think President Obama has done himself and the country a disservice by caving and showing lack of resolve on so many important policy issues when the Republicans voiced opposition. Which leaves a huge question in the minds of many: Does President Barack Obama have any political principles that he will not cave on if the Republicans object? I think it would be in President Obama's best interest to talk less about policies and get some legislation done to help the poor, working, and middle classes find jobs and business opportunities.

I know I am late in response to this article, but I wanted to say how successful you have been in exposing the bare truth of the South African social crisis.

It seems to me that whites always criticize the measures taken to ensure that every man or woman under the sun is treated fair and justly. They do not seem to realize that they are in the same mind set they were in when slavery and apartheid took place. We were limited in what fields we could perform in and discouraged to better our well being.

Whites would rather have the free will to persecute over a law telling them to them to provide us with the same economical possibilities as them. Affirmative action and laws similar to it only exist because whites had the chance to give us equal opportunities and disallowed it.

I thank you for your education us, on a pressing matter.
