It now seems that I was a little too flip or at a minimum premature with my "rap sheet" remark as Mr. Greene was reportedly cleared of all pending charges this date. While this development is certainly helpful to Mr. Greene my view that he is being used against the interests of his own people changes not at all.

Well said, and timely too as "talking heads" in both the media and in politics these days pretend that the openly flawed Ronald Reagan was something more than he was. Very few appreciate the history of events in full view of a world audience.
Has anyone seen Artur Davis and South Carolina's Senate candidate Alvin Greene at the same place at the same time? The principal major difference between them, for me, is that Davis has a Harvard education without a "rap" sheet: Greene, like Sarah Palin, paid little attention while in school. Neither seems to have the requisite concern for the community that they would be charged to represent. It's a sad reality that in the Black communities all over America we have too many Artur Davis types, and too few working to reverse the real, entrenched, problems caused by centuries of human slavery followed by neo-slavery called the Black Codes. It is beyond evident that African-Americans have not yet been compensated for their stolen labor, nor for numerous other inequities, including inferior education delivered through deliberate, continued, segregation: such conditions help deliver and will continue to deliver the likes of Artur Davis and Alvin Greene, and too many others until we force this nation to really change.

Les agree with you on this. Cannot understand the wave of concern that bigotry is still alive in America.

What the media has done and you have pointed out given 'crackpots in obscurity' more time at the expense of others things that matter.

Rand's 'beliefs' unquestionably lives in some Democrats and Republicans. What is IS. The question: How will Blacks continue to fight and hold on to the little that remains-- what they fought for-- when the cries are loud "we want our country back" gets louder?

We have a whole lot of work to do. Much remains undone. Unfortunately, the struggle continues.

As an African-American veteran who had similar military experiences I identify with this important piece. My father served, my two brothers served, and my late sister was an officer and served in Vietnam.(Curiously, African-Americans are generally seen as "unpatriotic"). While Americans sometimes reluctantly admit defeat in Vietnam they rarely mention the carnage of perhaps as many as 3 million Indochinese killed in that theater of operations, mostly civilians, as is the case in most wars. Although war is glorified in this culture, exploited veterans of an economic draft continue to get less than their due. Meaningful foreign policy change may be coming, but it isn't evident to this writer- if it's coming at all it's coming at a snail's pace.
