Media Brands Tiger With Scarlet "A"

That scarlet “A” on Tiger Wood’s chest was imprinted there by a media unforgiving of his adultery against the alabaster Swedish au pair the golfer dared take as his wife. These Puritans are determined also to remove the swoosh of endorsements from Woods’ cap and golf gear and have him walk the greens for the rest of his life in sackcloth.

Like Hester Prynne, of Nathaniel Hawthorne’s “Scarlet Letter,” the condemned Tiger Woods must now walk to the scaffold of the pillory and face the judgment of the community, either on the shoulders of Oprah, or under the scold of Steve Kroft.

The 17th Century crime of Tiger Woods’, as noted on the web of pillory, has been clocked as serial and in double figures.

Such patterns unfortunately are not unknown among entertainers these days when backpedaling superstars routinely catch scores of willing groupies overnight. This normalization of Puritan misbehavior among film, music and sports celebrities appears to have caught unaware a media far gone in the peck and sniff.

Unfolding 24/7 since Thanksgiving, the volume and breathlessness of the news coverage, so-called, presents Woods as the poster child of celebrity philandering—as well as its' creator. Viewed, say, from Mars, it would appear that, among superstars, nothing has happened to marital fidelity since Hawthorne wrote his Scarlet Letter novel in 1850 about an incident that reportedly occurred among Massachusetts Puritans of the 1600’s.

Woods has been measured against this very standard of Puritanism—and found wanting by a truly amazed media. They care not a whit about the general normalization of such bad behavior among celebrities in this specific case.

One well-known, veteran sports writer stated on national TV that Woods should be paid not a dime in endorsements, or even allowed to play golf until and unless he publicly declares his monogamous fidelity to his former, swim-suit modeling, blond, silicone-enhanced, traveling nanny from Sweden.

While Woods must take full blame for his discretions—as he has—the media in their madness might reconstruct details of the Thanksgiving night episode, consider the possibility of spousal assault, and report on the unraveling of the marriage with disinterestedness, measured dispatch and fairness all around.

As a side-bar, the circumstances of Woods’ life as a golfing child prodigy may well have ill-prepared him for the domestic hearth as a 28-year old pro on tour. This golf circuit would exert enormous stress fractures on the marital survivability of any young couple.

It might lower the temperature and improve the tone and substance of the news coverage, so-called, if the media would take into clear-eyed account the bizarre pressure brought to bear upon the lives of celebrities such as Woods. They might also take a look at the backgrounds of prodigies who are pressed into sports as infants by domineering parents, usually fathers, who obsessively grind out their own ambitions through their off-spring.

Andre Agassi’s autobiography, “Open,” describes his “lost childhood” given over to his father’s crazed pursuit of championship tennis. Incubated in a “Lord of the Flies” Florida Academy under a “forehands” drill instructor, Agassi’s socialization was stunted just as surely as Father Earl sidetracked Tiger’s development in areas outside golf.

Starting in 7th grade, Agassi gave what little time he had off court to the zany distractions of his hedge-row Mohawk, black eyeliner and a gold earring. Post-adolescence, the tennis phenom labored for attention under the influence of high-octane liquor and dope smoking, then graduated to seek relaxation between tournaments as an active pyromaniac setting fires in hotel rooms.

Not exactly fit for marriage, the 9th grade drop-out—most such tennis players escape high school—took Brooke Shields as his first wife. On their very wedding day, America’s sweetheart doomed the marriage by coaxing her groom to wear lifts in his shoes so she could walk upright in heels. Losing his hair as the couple forsook each other, Aggassi wandered off from Brooke Shields under his extravagant hairpieces, losing matches and dropping crystal meth—all under the radar of the sporting media that’s hell-bent on holding Woods’ feet to the Puritan fires.

As for the prodigy-turned-golf-phenom, Tiger chose to go trysting after the tail of his lost childhood. Through fault of his own, he finds himself armpit deep in the dismal swamp of a five-year marriage with two children.

As his judgment went south, Woods’ taste ran to hostesses of the night, errant barmaids, roving-eyed, event planners, Vegas-type porn stars, and, yes, blond nannies and gold-digging models of skimp. While avoiding Agassi’s Mohawk, earrings and crystal meth, as far as we know, Tiger Woods morphed off-course into a frat-house, Cablinasian superstar jock whose social development got arrested somewhere around adolescence.

None of this excuses Woods’ errant behavior any more than his behavior justifies the media branding Tiger Woods across his celebrity chest with a 17th Century scarlet letter “A” —deep into the first decade of the 21st Century.

Your article on Tiger Woods is interesting on many levels - the language is colorful and apt, the lack of socialization and philandering seems to conflict and Tiger forsook the former. I am struck by the economic class and whites-only criteria Tiger Woods set for his so-called marriage and tomcatting activities. It appears that the boy is a racist because he hasn't shared his [player] money with any Black working class or professional women - I resent that. I also get the sense that all of Tiger Woods lawyers, accountants, and handlers are white folks - explaining to some degree the lame public relation job we have seen thus far. In the end, Tiger Woods will pay dearly for his racist attitude toward Black women, but unfortunately only whites will get paid. I wonder how Tiger's father Earl Woods would feel about this mess?

I don't know what Tiger's father would have thought. But judging from his very worldly background, he had the superb knowledge and potential, too offer Tiger well needed wisdom before he even got married.

I don't consider that Tiger slighted Black women. He doesn't consider himself black, and what good woman of any kind would want to be involved with him at this point, (STD'S) hint, hint.

Personally, I'm happy that a women of color has not been involved, Yet.

I thought that Les Paynes article was quite insightful. I really like the way he thinks.

When a large part of a young person's life has been chopped away, something has to give, sometime, somewhere, somehow, down the road.

What puzzles me is where the criticism is coming from. We're living in a Sodom and Go Gomorrah Society, and the very people who are condemning Tiger, Perpetuate it, Cultivate it, and Capitalize upon it.

I sincerely wish the best for Tiger. My hope is that he will find a good and wise Father image who will counsel him.

    One such as Les Payne.

Frankly, when it comes to Tiger woods why should people of color, be concerned with his fall from grace, with regards to white
society? While i dont wish anything bad on him, Unfortunately he made his bed, now he has to lie in it. Like someone already referenced he is a man, who is running away from who he is, namely a black man blessed by god, to be supremely gifted in playing a basically white
sport, called golf. Anytime you have a person of color, with special talents/or abilities in any venue, and he distances himself or
herself, from his people has just opened himself up for a rude awakening.

You are safe as long as you stay in your delusional place, make money for the white elites, and do nothing to hurt or embarrass his white
wife. Once the media gets any hint, of possible flawed behavior, against this symbol of purity than open season begins. Does anyone
remember the KOBE BRYANT incident out in colorado? Sadly, this is how they do black people, who have attained a high degree of
excellence, whether in sports, music, education, the first mistake is blown way out of proportion. Remember DOC GOODEN, formerly of the ny mets? a great guy, and a humble person, excellent pitcher. Soon as he was found out to be using cocaine, he was the worst person in the world.

Look at the CHRIS BROWN situation with RIHANNA. It's too bad for tiger woods, but this is a lesson he deserves. I hope he will come to his senses, before its too late. Otherwise, he will be fine make no mistake. He is a billionaire, he will make more money as he still has several good years of playing golf left. FURTHEMORE, he will still have his choice of all type of white women, be they SLUTS, NANNY'S,
GOLD-DIGGERS, PROSTITUTES, GROUPIES, it's his world. Shed no tears, for mr tiger woods. For, at the end of the day he will be fine, believe me.

I agree. Although i very perplexing and downright aggravating that the media is hooking him on his infidelity. It has reached the point wherein ESPN has a tiger. I think this however speaks to what Mr Earl Caldwell states every week... there are no Journalists in the Media (or comparatively very few). infidelity is nothing new and I am pretty certain every person who knew tiger and of him knew he was Married... so what about the tramps that laid beside him
